Choosing the right belt size is often overlooked, but it plays a crucial role in both how you look, and in how comfortable you feel.
Whether you're shopping for a new belt or trying to make sense of the sizing options in your closet, understanding how to measure for the perfect fit is essential.
We’ll take you through this step-by-step guide for finding your perfect belt size, and show you how to style your new belt.
Which size to buy
Belt sizes are typically measured in inches, and are determined by the distance from the where the belt folds over where it attaches to the buckle, to the middle hole of the belt. Buckle throw, the distance from the bale, the part of the buckle that attaches to the leather, to the prong where it grabs the belt hole can make a difference. Most of our buckles have a one inch throw. Most of the one-piece buckles have a two inch throw.
Our standard belt sizes range from 30 to 50 inches. Our belts are even sized (for example, 30, 32, 34), and we do take special orders for odd belt sizes at no additional charge (like 29, 31, 33). Larger or smaller, or custom sizes are available by request.
As a rule of thumb, for men, belt sizes are two inches larger than your pants waist size. For example, if you typically wear a size 34 waist pants, you will likely need a size 36 belt. For women the same rule of thumb applies, but you have to consider if you wear your belt at your waist, or hips, or in between.
How to find your belt size
For the perfect, most comfortable fit, use your current belt to measure for size. Begin by measuring from the fold, where the belts folds over to attach to the buckle, to the hole that’s used the most when you wear your belt.
Use a tape measure or piece of string to measure the length from the fold to the most worn hole in your belt. Make sure the belt is laid flat and taut for accurate measurement.
The length in inches from the fold to the most used hole will be your best belt size. If your measurement falls between belt sizes, just round up to the nearest size for a comfortable fit. Tom Taylor belts come with five holes, for the perfect fit, it's best to be in the middle hole. Many people's size fluctuates, as long as you are in one of the three center holes, you should be fine.
One other consideration for determining belt size is the buckle you will use. Make sure that when you measure one of your old belts, pick one that has a similar buckle to what you will use, or will be purchasing. The buckles “throw,” or length of the buckle can make a difference.
The buckle throw on most of our buckle sets are about the same, but large one-piece or trophy buckles can be quite a bit longer. If your new belt will use the same buckle type as your current belt, you will be fine.
By following these steps, you should be able to determine your correct belt size, and order a belt that fits you comfortably and securely. The right belt width for you
Most men prefer a wider belt, 1¼-inch or 1½-inch. Both widths work fine with jeans or khakis. However, a 1½-inch belt is too wide for most dress pants.
Women choose belt widths for the style or look that they are going for.
Remember that we take special orders for any belt width. We also take special orders for ranger belts, in which a narrower billet is sewn onto the length of the belt. Ranger belts are a good way to showcase a small buckle set on a much wider belt.
Styling your belt
Apart from size, the style of the belt also matters. Different outfits and occasions call for varying belt styles:
- Formal outfits often call for leather belts in classic colors like black or brown.
- Casual outfits can be paired with more versatile or statement belts.
Choose a buckle that complements the overall look of your outfit. Classic, minimalist buckles work well for formal occasions, while more elaborate buckles can add flair to casual wear.
