He has long talked about experimenting with soldering steel to sterling silver, and this buckle represents the breakthrough—steel on the front, sterling silver on the back, brought together seamlessly. Engraved entirely “on the fly,” Neil let the design reveal itself as he worked, an approach only an artist of his caliber could execute without painting himself into a corner. His instincts were flawless.

The borders combine two classic motifs—dot-and-line and running leaf—each subtly reinforcing the trophy aesthetic. The checkering is more refined than his typical style, inspired by the wood-stock detailing on fine engraved firearms. Even the silver bail carries the engraver’s touch: directional hatching on the front reduces shine to keep attention on the buckle face, while the side of the bail is fully hand engraved.
